Waistlines, Crunches, Core Strength and Myths

Trying to strengthen your core and whittle away your waistline with crunches?

Core strength goes way beyond the "6-pack". A strong core means strengthening several groups of muscles. The glutes (thats your butt), lower back, hip flexors, pelvic floor (think the ability to sneeze safely), inner & outer thighs and the deep core stabilizers or transverse abdominis (think flat abs).

Myths

  • The core is NOT another name for the abdominals.

  • Doing 100s of abdominal crunches (sit-ups as we used to call them) is NOT the most efficient way to build a strong core or reduce belly fat.

  • Training your core will NOT get rid of belly fat and give you a six-pack.

  • Core strength is NOT related to the size of your waistline.

  • The best way to strengthen your core muscles is NOT to isolate them with specific exercises

  • Doing abdominal crunches will result in a strong core.

Check out this weeks Get To The Core yoga class. A beautifully effective 30 min practice that will target your core and leave you feeling strong and empowered.

Hi Janine. Thanks I’ve actually half written a blog covering some of your suggestions. Great minds think alike. If you’d like to become a site member you’ll get notified when I post blogs which you might find useful.

Just discovered this section on the website Ann. It's great. I'd love to read a post on a bit more of the history of yoga, the different types, what each is good for etc. Just in your spare time my friend!
